Taking Stock - KCMO Park and Facility Assessments

During March and April of 2023, our team visited over 240 different Kansas City park properties. From athletic complexes to community centers, and from parks to greenways, our team spent time in each property maintained by the Kansas City, Missouri Park and Recreation Department. We did this exercise to take inventory of what exists in this system today and also assess the current condition of each.
We assessed every individual park and facility on a scale of 0 to 100 according to rubrics developed in close coordination with city staff. In general, that rubric graded these spaces according to their accessibility, comfort and character, their usability or operability, and their amenities.
On an individual basis, the assessments help us understand the unique needs of each park or facility. In aggregate, they tell us the strengths and weaknesses of the system across council districts and as a whole. As we continue to aggregate and analyze this data, it will inform the final recommendations of the plan. Stay tuned!
